Consecrated in the 13th century, Meryem Ana Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi represents the only Byzantine church in Istanbul that has never served as a mosque. The building is located somewhat off the beaten path and is rarely open to the public. Saved from conversion to a mosque by the personal request of Mehmed the Conqueror, the church is named after Princess Maria Paleogina, illegitimate child of Emperor Michael VIII Paleologos.
