Must see · Castle · Tourist Spot
A quadrangular castle with buildings lining the outer walls, Bodiam Castle was once a bustling household. The outer walls were meant for display as well as defense, supporting important buildings to the household's function. The inner court holds the remains of a great hall located near the pantry and kitchens, as well as the Dalygrigge family's private chambers. The outer walls are mostly intact while the inner are ruins, but enough of the original floor plan is recognizable to identify the structures. The ruins make for haunting photos and provide a walking tour through history. Make Bodiam Castle part of your personalized Bodiam itinerary using our Bodiam trip planner.

  • This was a nice castle to explore The history behind it is interesting. Surrounding the castle, is a wide moat. For children, there is an area for training to be a knight. Unfortunately, I couldn't go up the towers or participate in archery due to the wind. They have a nice little video describing the purpose and history of the castle. I got lots of nice pictures with the bridge. I would definitely check this one out if you are in the area.
  • Really enjoyable day at Bodiam yesterday despite being very, very hot! Interesting history in lovely surroundings. Nice little cafe to eat if you choose to or plenty of space to picnic. Knowledgeable National Trust volunteers provided informative talks and walks around the site.
