ANIMAL PARK

HAVE FUN FEEDING the sheep and goats and meet all our farmyard friends including cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks and more.

The Animal Park is working with the RARE BREEDS SURVIVAL TRUST to enhance its breeding program and during the last year introduced Portland sheep.

Children love the play area and NATURE TRAIL around the lake.

GARDENS

A tranquil, peaceful and intimate spot, the gardens are beautifully situated in undulating Dorset countryside, with a lake, canals, broad sweeping and formal gardens.

The lovely 35 acre formal gardens were created by the Hanburys between 1915 and 1922 within the existing framework of an eighteenth century Capability Brown style parkland setting and the vestiges of a Victorian garden.

The formal gardens are set on a number of axes – the main north/south axis leads from the Red Garden, through the Mediterranean Border, to the Double Herbaceous Border and the main east/west axis leads from the Brick Garden, along the Terrace Border, and the south front of the Main House.

On either side of these axes are small areas of self contained “compartments” or “rooms”, partitioned by hedges of crisply cut yew or box, which form the main structure of these gardens. Each of these has a central feature, such as a pool, or statuary or a theme, such as Penstemon Terrace or Rose Garden.

Each garden has a distinct character of its own and the carefully orchestrated planting and plant associations, designed to give colour throughout the year, all unite to ensure an overall pattern and harmony together with the subtle blending of the formal with the informal.

  • As a local business using the facilities for business purposes the offering and service has wained over time and the price has increased. The room for £300 for 4 hours was dirty , welcome was poor...  more »
  • Lovely day for younger children . Although this is a beautiful place and it is lovely . I found it was a little expensive to what it used to be . Comparing it to other places I have visited recently.....  more »

  • A wonderful wander through picturesque gardens, and a great place to see many different types of animal. Kingston Maurward Gardens and Agricultural Centre provides an opportunity to see many different varieties of animals, from chickens to wallabies! There's a café, toilet facilities, and a shop where you can buy drinks, ice creams, gifts, and food to feed the animals. Take a walk by the lake and see the iconic Lady holding a sword aloft, walk by the Greek temple or explore the many and varied gardens surrounding the great house. The gardens are simply beautiful, and it would be easy to imagine traveling back in time here to take part in any Victorian period drama you could imagine. On a late summer's afternoon, with blue skies and white fluffy clouds, it's hard to imagine a more idyllic place.
  • We are here for a training course on handling animals for the Fire and Rescue Service. Expert lecturers on all animals to enable the Fire service to deal with incidents that involve the rescue of creatures great and small. Great venue with good facilities and very knowledgeable staff. Predominately an agricultural college but courses are available for a wide range of skills. Well worth looking at their website for more details.
