Brixton Windmill (Ashby's Mill) Reviews
Whilst in Brixton, i would take the opportunity to visit one of the oldest and last Windmill in London. Historical and interesting. more »
Hidden along a residential street off Brixton Hill is this perfectly restored windmill. A relic from a Brixton of the 19th century, used to mill grain for bread, this is lovely reminder of London’s... more »
Hidden gem in Brixton. I did the short tour after an heritage walk around Brixton. You can turn up without booking for the short tour (it is free), which is only for the ground floor and 1st floor of the mill. However, as it wasn't too busy, our guide took us up to the 2nd floor. There are 5 floors in total. For the longer tour, it's best to book in advance. The places fill quickly as they can only accommodate a maximum of 5/6 people at any one time. Lovely place, surrounded by a small park with a shop onsite selling milled wholemeal flour, tote bags, badges, books and, other memorabilia. There is also a small cafe and a public toilet. A must visit!
This is a random gem in the middle of London. One of the last functioning Windmills, although electric now, makes for a good exploration adventure with kids. Make sure to reserve tickets in advance as it is not open frequently. It sits in a nice park with playground so you can picnic. Also, go home with some Brixton floor!
