Tate Modern is one of the world's vanguards of modern and contemporary art. Installations and exhibits here change periodically, so check to see what's on display before you visit. Past installations have included a giant tuba hanging from the ceiling and diatribes playing through speakers. You'll also encounter art that's more historical, yet still modern. The Poetry and Dream gallery contains Surrealist works, Structure and Dream presents abstract art, and Energy and Process focuses on Arte Povera--a radical modern art movement that took place in Italy from 1967-1972. To learn more about the galleries' highlights, take one of the daily free tours lasting about 45 minutes. At the entrance it's all very confusing. there is no clear map available, the elevators are very slow and the works are placed on several floors without a real logical order. The only consolation is that it's free.
We were really looking forward to visiting the Tate Modern, but were sorely disappointed. It appeared that the curators were trying to teach about art and in so doing they took away the joy of just ex... more »
Its way more open and empty than I imagined. Id hoped for a great display of art but I was somewhat undewhelmed. A pretty decent venue though and it seems to be undergoing some development so I'm sure when I return my views will change. Still a recommended visit.
I have been going to this museum with my wife and kids for over 15 years. It's a must-see for contemporary art and architecture buffs alike. There is so much art to see for free, and you could easily hang out in the building and the surrounding outdoor spaces all day if you wanted to. For the paying exhibits, make sure to check in advance for availability because the crowds can get big.
