Learn about the history of London at the architectural gem of The Charterhouse, a former Carthusian priory turned private mansion. Founded by Catholic monks in 1371 to bury victims of the plague, the complex fell victim to Henry VIII's brutal nationalization policy, which in 1537 dissolved all monasteries. In the 17th century, it converted into an almshouse. Today, the site provides an oasis of calm in the midst of the busy city. Take a self-guided tour of ornately decorated rooms, the chapel with elaborate wood carvings and a great hall, the old library, the cloister, and the meticulously kept courtyard. To take advantage of guided tours every second Saturday, book in advance. Really interesting visit. Worth doing the tour. We only did the one hour one but would doing there to hour over another time. Fascinating building and story.

A gem of a place. Truly special. Had a tour by one of the one of the residents of the almshouse and it was wonderful — particularly loved the chapel and dining hall. While it’s not the most exciting place, it is one of the most memorable, edifying experiences I’ve had in London.
