Vestry House was originally built as a workhouse and was later used as a police station and also as private housing (amongst the exhibits is a replica police cell demonstrating one of the building's previous uses). The building became a museum in 1931.
On permanent display in the museum is the Bremer Car, the first British motor car with an internal combustion engine, which was built by Frederick Bremer (1872–1941) in a workshop at the back of his family home in Connaught Road, Walthamstow. The car first ran in 1892 and was donated to the museum by Bremer in 1933.

I came across this place in a magazine advertising a easter egg hunt. I was not sure what to expect given the location and size but it turned out to be a pleasant visit. The museum itself is housed in the old workhouse (hence the name!) Spread over two floors and much larger inside than it appears to be from the outside. It also has a nice garden which took me by surprise. You could probably spend an hour here before moving on.
Really interesting story of the local area and workhouse. The lady who greeted us was fantastic, gave us loads of interesting information and told us about other local events that were on.
