William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow

The William Morris Gallery is the only public museum devoted to English Arts and Crafts designer and early socialist William Morris. The gallery is located at Walthamstow in Morris's family home from 1848 to 1856 (Morris's teenage years), the former Water House, a substantial Grade II* listed Georgian dwelling of about 1750 which is set in its own extensive grounds (now Lloyd Park). It was opened as a museum by Prime Minister Clement Attlee in 1950, and underwent major redevelopment in 2012. In 2013 it won the national prize for Museum of the Year.

  • We love visiting the William Morris Gallery. The house is beautiful and the exhibition about Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement are very interesting. There is a puppet show and fancy dress the kids can play with in the top floor. The temporary exhibitions are always fascinating and interesting. The service at the cafe could be quicker - that’s the only niggle I have with the gallery.
  • Wonderful to have this lovely place on our doorstep. Especially appreciate the special exhibitions that have been on recently. Cafe is good too...but their coffee is really overpriced. I'd go more if they brought the quality up and prices down in line with the rest of the market. Gift shop could sell more local products and art.
