Walk above the dessert canyon walls and along the creek bed under the canopy of oak trees at Oak Canyon Nature Center. Watch for birds as you hike the well-marked and easy trails. In the spring, you can see prickly pear cacti, poppies, and other budding plants along the canyon walls. Visit the interpretive center to learn more about the area. Make sure to bring a hat and apply sunscreen before heading on the Roadrunner Ridge trail. This was a relaxing stroll along a stream in a beautiful park. The cotrast in the rich vegetation fed by the stream and the dry hillsides was striking. more »

So nice to get inside a quiet area with plenty of greenery and trails to casually walk through as well as some higher trails to challenge us. more »

Oak Canyon Nature Center is such a versatile location for Engagement Sessions, Weddings, and Family Photography Sessions. They have an extremely reasonable photo permit fee! It is such a small price to pay for a location that offers SO much. Not only is the area surrounded with beautiful oak trees that provide a nice cover, there are other open areas that offer a lot of sunlight that is crucial to great photographs. As a wedding and portrait photographer, I love to head to this location anytime to create great photographs with clients. You can't go wrong!

I was able to complete every trail here twice, in the span of a little under two hours, while hauling a child on my back and a girlfriend trailing me. I really enjoy the scenery, and the fact that most of the trails are completely shaded. Regretfully, I have to give the place a three star rating. The three star rating is because I felt as if there were only two trails, though there were many to choose from. This is because once you have seen the upper area, nearly everything in the lower area is exactly the same. Not to say that the lower area isn't beautiful or diverse, but the trails are also so short that I couldn't find a sense of accomplishment in completing them twice over again. I'd like to return, strictly for photography purposes, but as for hiking this place is best left for casual strolls with a romantic date or socializing.
