Kartchner Caverns State Park, Benson

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Benson
Cave · State Park
At Kartchner Caverns State Park, you'll discover a 3.9 km (2.4 mi) long limestone cave, with formations that have accumulated for over 50,000 years. The cave is known for some of the world's longest "soda straw" stalactites, an 18 m (58 ft) tall column, and a room with the world's most extensive formation of moonmilk--a white and creamy cave substance. Visit the 2,100 sq m (23,000 sq ft) visitor center, where you'll hear about the geology, the bat population, and the paleontology of these caverns. There are picnic places and camp sites in the area. Check at the visitor center to be sure the caves are open--at certain times during summer the caverns are closed because bats colonize them. • This was my first visit in the caverns and I was not disappointed. That fact that they are so diligent in keeping the cavern pristine really impressed me. Also seeing the fact that the walkway inside the cavern is wheelchair friendly was amazing. Remember you can not carry anything inside so they offer lockers for you to use. The visitors center is beautiful and the rangers are very knowlwdgable and friendly. All I can say about the cavern is you have to see it to understand the beauty of it. Mother nature is pretty talented at building these magnificent caverns.
  • The caves are remarkable. My tour guide (Ranger Kyle) answered all my questions and kept the tour entertaining. I'd recommend the caves to anyone. Their facilities are really nice and there are several hiking opportunities available.
