Devoted to the Chinese ancient teacher and philosopher Confucius, Temple of Literature & National University houses the first university of Vietnam founded in the 11th century. Constructed under Ly Thanh Tong dynasty in the typical Vietnamese traditional architectural style--from wood and tiles--the temple features five historic courtyards. See the statues representing the ancient teacher and his honored disciples, the 82 stelas commemorating notable scholars, and a small collection of student and mandarin traditional uniforms. Walk the lanes planted with century-old trees and look for a tortoise head--you can see students rubbing it for good luck before taking exams. Temple of Literature & National University Reviews
Daje wytchnienie od tłoku Hanoi. Stylowe, otoczone zielenią miejsce. Warto znaleźć czas i odwiedzić świątynię. more »It gives a rest from the crowds of Hanoi. Stylish, surrounded by greenery place. It is worth to find time and visit the temple.
It is the third time I visit this place and each time it is different but worthy. In particular the stèles and all the history about the role of education in Vietnam. I recommend the audio guide more »
Nice walk through the gardens led us to the library for scholars of Confucianism, there are explanation tables as well in English. Entry costs 30 Thai baht per person, entry/exit is from the south. Do not forget to entry the very last 2 story building ;) and on the exit way back the nice summer house in the gardens.
This is certainly a beautiful places and can be a serene and calm visit (if you can avoid the big groups). The architecture and the gardens are worth seeing if you have enough time in the city. However, the information given was not great, especially if you come from a different cultural background, so if you're visiting on your own don't expect to understand everything.
