Create an itinerary including Sedlec Ossuary
An example of one of the more unusual ways to store and display human remains, Sedlec Ossuary is a small chapel located beneath what is likely the oldest cemetery in Central Europe. The ossuary contains at least 40,000 human skeletons arranged in bizarre shapes that resemble chandeliers, pyramids, crosses, and coats of arms. These strange chapel decorations, the work of a 19th-century master builder named Frantisek Rint, contain skulls and bones previously disinfected and bleached in chlorinated lime. A chilling reminder of the fleetingness of human life, this World Heritage-listed site attracts a quarter of a million people each year. You can reach it by minibus running from Kutna Hora town center. Using our custom trip planner, Kutna Hora attractions like Sedlec Ossuary can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Parking close. No photos inside. Beautiful though in a way that is hard to describe, and the bones were a way of honoring the dead. Takes less than 30 minutes to visit.

  • Very creepy but awesome. It's an hour train ride from Prague which is totally doable. The website says it's about 15 minute visit, and it really isn't big but I think it's worth it.

  • wanted to visit this place for so long and finally got to. did not disappoint! very interesting sight but no need to reserve too much time, it's fairly small. everyone we met in Kutná Hora, including the staff at the visitor centre, was super friendly. thank you!
  • This is such an interesting (and strange) place! I had never been to an ossuary so I was quite amazed. It's quite small and there is little to no information on display. There is a joint ticket available with St. Barbara's Cathedral, which is also a must see. The church is small and bizarre and definitely worth a visit. Photography is not allowed.
