Champagne Thierry Rodez, Ambonnay

Champagne Thierry Rodez is a small, fifth-generation champagne producer with 3.4 hectares (8.4 acres) of vineyards. They press, vinify, and sell their grapes to other winemakers, but they also make their own champagne. They are always delighted to welcome you for a tour and a degustation (tasting) of their champagne if they're home, so advance reservations are encouraged. If you enjoy a small, traditional vigneron champenois with a free-spirited group of folks, then this vineyard is a great place for you to visit.

Signature champagne varieties, include Cuvée Blanc de Noir 2004 made with 100 percent Pinot Noir grapes, Cuvée Extra Brut produced from the best years' harvests, Rosé Brut with salmon-pink hues, Brut Réserve aged four to five years but non-vintage, and their flagship wine Brut Sans Année made with 70 percent Pinot Noir and 30 percent Chardonnay.

Unlike neighboring large-scale wineries, this small, family-owned winery provides you with a personalized experience and a tasting of champagne in a real glass flute. If you don't have a ride to the vineyard, a member of the family is happy to pick you up from the tourist office and take you back. You will meet Jessie, the owner's wife, and enjoy a relaxed conversation about the family, the champagne, and their vineyard.
