One of the largest medieval fortresses of Western Europe, Chateau de Caen was built in 1060 by William the Conqueror, who successfully conquered England in 1066. Along with all of Normandy, it was handed over to the French Crown in 1204. The castle saw several engagements during the Hundred Years' War and was in use as a barracks as late as World War II. Bullet holes are visible on the walls of the castle where members of the French Resistance were shot. Really nice medieval castle that’s free to enter. There’s also ruins of William the Conquerors palace. It also has amazing views of Caen. There is an art museum inside of you want to pay money to go in. There is also a free museum on the history of Normandy. You can also walk the walls of the castle for a nice view. It’s a good place to wander around. Keep in mind that Normandy weather can be cold even in summer, so be prepared for clouds and rain.

Beautiful and majestic historical castle in Caen, Normandy. Built on a hill in 1060, by William of Normandy, who later conquered England, the castle walls provides an excellent panoramic view of the city on all sides. The castle walls are free to walk, though it involves some stairs. Highly recommended to visit when you are in Caen.
