Musee de la Mer was established in 1977 within a fort called ‘Old Castle’. The Old castle is divided into parts – the prison and the museum. When you visit the museum, you will see stunning archaeological remains from underwater excavations. • touch history by visiting the cell of the Iron Mask and other infamous royal prisoners, marvel on the archaeological artifacts plucked from nearby shipwrecks, it's worth the small entrance fee!

  • The museum and prison are not very big. I really liked that students under the age of 26 could visit the museum and prison for free. The cell of the man in the iron mask is very interesting. Given the size of the cell, one can tell that the man in the iron mask was not just any prisoner but of incredible importance. The cell's window has 3 sets of iron bars, which are misaligned so that it is not possible for a prisoner to throw something outside.
  • It is one of the must see of the island. Its not very big so you can very well visit the whole thing in around 2 hours. But the small aquarium only opens on Friday. There is also a free guided visit in French, just ask the person at the entrance and they will tell you. From here you can definitely take some panorama photos of Cannes too
