Fort de Conde is a fortification of the Séré de Rivières system built in France between 1877 and 1883 to defend the land between Soissons and Laon. Although the fort was obsolete at the start of World War I, its command of strategic ground made it a coveted area throughout the war as it changed hands several times. Following the war, it was abandoned and then purchased by a local community for you to visit. To visit Fort de Conde on your trip to Chivres-Val, use our Chivres-Val trip itinerary planner.

  • As the fortress was never attacked, it is wonderful to see one complete and unmarked. We were given english audio guides which were excellent, there are information boards scattered about as well...

  • This is a highlight. The fort is not what you expect. It looks relatively small but is Anything but, as you find while exploring. There’s a treasure hunt with audio guide in several languages...

  • Bigger and better than we expected. The Fort is well and with a lot of effort renovated Nice lonely and quiet place for an night in the camper
  • Hidden Gem of a history lesson. Travel back to 1880 38 years before the first world way and see how the French defended themselves in the Franco-Prussian war in which it was defeated. It has been under preservation since 1979. Well worth a visit. It's not small so bring walking shoes and a packed lunch
