Big Red One Assault Museum
For a dose of interesting history, head over to Big Red One Assault Museum in Normandy, a site dedicated to the efforts of the US First Infantry Division, nicknamed the Big Red One, and particularly their part in the D-Day Landings on June 6, 1944. The museum includes a number of displays and activities. Watch a fascinating film that chronicles the events of the assault, or you can also go on an hour-long guided tour in either French or English.
The Big Red One division was part of the infamous landing at Omaha Beach where, despite the difficulties encountered, they together with the 29th division went on to secure the areas around Saint-Laurent, Vierville, and Colleville. This museum is very very small, takes less than 5 minutes to walk around it and then back to the car park! Wouldn't have bothered had I known! Cheap entry but much better museums in the area to visit for just a few euros more.

Great artifacts that are rotated periodically by the owner/collector/curator, Pierre. Many are personal items donated by veterans and their families. Many of the others are items Pierre has found himself on the beaches. The space is small but the exhibits are robust and laid out with care. Pierre himself is a wealth of knowledge and a longtime enthusiast willing to share what he knows.
