Create an itinerary including Saint Catherine's Catholic Church
the largest church made out of wood in France, Saint Catherine's Catholic Church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. A wooden sculpture shows her holding a wheel and a sword. The first nave is the oldest part of the building, dating to the second half of the 15th century. It was built using naval construction techniques, which gives the impression of an upside-down ship's hull. In the 16th century, a second nave was added, whose vault was like the wooden vaults of modest Gothic churches. The famous "axe masters" of the city’s naval yards created this lovely building without using any saws, just like their Norman ancestors and the Vikings before them. There's a bell tower separate from the principal building. Make Saint Catherine's Catholic Church a part of your Honfleur vacation plans using our Honfleur day trip site.

  • The Saint Catherine's Church is the oldest and biggest wooden Church in all of France. It dates back to 15 century when it was built by Honfleur's fishermen and shipbuilders - two most important and lucrative businesses of that time. The Church is in central Honfleur, just a street above the picturesque harbor, set on a tiny square so it looks gigantic. It consists of a long 3 nave main Church building and a separate bell tower across it. Very interesting interiors that differ from other Churches in Normandy.
  • Quite an amazing place to visit. Best to walk in from lower streets as traffic and parking can be a problem. Surrounded by quaint little shops. Also one of the few public toilets in the area is right outside.
