Chateau de Joux, La Cluse-et-Mijoux

Experience the evolution of military architecture from the Middle Ages at Chateau de Joux. It was a stone castle, transformed later into a fort, then a state prison, and now, it is a Monument Historique. The fortress currently houses an arms museum that exhibits more than 600 rare weapons dating to the early 18th to 20th centuries, including a rare 1717 rifle. The Route Abolitions memorial allows you to retrace the routes used by black slaves to escape. The castle also has one of the deepest wells in all of Europe reaching a depth of 120 m (390 ft).
