Create an itinerary including Chateau de Joux
Experience the evolution of military architecture from the Middle Ages at Chateau de Joux. It was a stone castle, transformed later into a fort, then a state prison, and now, it is a Monument Historique. The fortress currently houses an arms museum that exhibits more than 600 rare weapons dating to the early 18th to 20th centuries, including a rare 1717 rifle. The Route Abolitions memorial allows you to retrace the routes used by black slaves to escape. The castle also has one of the deepest wells in all of Europe reaching a depth of 120 m (390 ft). Famous architect, Vauban, modernized the fort in 1690, and recent renovations keep with medieval design patterns so you can imagine what it may have looked like around 1000 CE. A visit to Chateau de Joux represents just the start of the adventure when you use our La Cluse-et-Mijoux trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • Amazing historical site with a very interesting story. From the middle ages through WWII, this site has seen an amazing amount of events. A must for a visit off-the-beaten-path.

  • Very very great castle! And such a Great visit! Very interesting history and good value for money activity. I had no idea what to expect but all the « expectations » were far exceeded! This is a strong recommendation and I give a special dedication to the staff on site. All of the guides, front desk people and even the security guards were exceptional and deserved all of our appreciation. Recommended!
  • Beatuiful castle with picturesque views and a lot of things to look at. Dogs are allowed everywhere, so bring your four legged friend along. :)
