Its sculptures, paintings, drawings, reliefs, and ceramics include impressive works from antiquity up to more recent times. Notable paintings include "Descent from the Cross" by Rubens, "The Birth of Venus" by Amaury Duval, and "Allegory of Worldly Vanities" by Pieter Boel. Sculptural works include the impressive "Feast of Herod" by Donatello and the bronze "Pénélope" by Émile-Antoine Bourdelle. Other old masters whose work is represented include Raphael, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Goya, El Greco, Corot, Courbet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rodin, Claudel, and Jean-Baptiste Chardin. I love this collection in Lille and try to visit whenever we're in town. There are good collections of middle age, early modern, XII, XIII and XIX art with also some interesting XX work. There is a significant sculpture hall and a hall of decorative arts, mostly ceramics. Interestingly in the basement are large scale 3d maps of frontier towns that I assume were for XII, XIII and XIX military planning. There's also a neat cafe on site so you can rest your legs!
