Create an itinerary including Mont Saint-Michel
For stunning medieval architecture that is surprisingly intact and well preserved, visit Mont Saint-Michel. You'll be amazed by the abbey's staggering architectural marvels dating back to the Roman Empire, as well as the visible time progression of this massive megastructure, which takes you on a journey towards more Gothic styles. The monastery and abbey are at the very top of the town, supplying panoramic views of the entire island and surrounding waters. You can book a guided tour or, if you prefer to wander on your own, pick up an audio guide in English. The welcome center also offers a free printed brochure that makes a great souvenir. • It looks a daunting walk up to the abbey but you can take it slowly and it is really a must do. It is a large complex and probably will take you 60 - 90 minutes to complete. You start at the top...

  • If you enjoy viewing old architecture like this, then you should definitely plan a trip. Parking cost us $10 in October. Then you should save your energy and ride the shuttle bus to the Abby. Once at the entrance, it is a long hike uphill and up stairs. We greatly enjoyed the tour. Well worth the price in our opinion. Signage was well placed to keep everyone moving along the same direction. Once done with the self guided tour, we explored the rest of the fortress, island. The remparts were also fun to hike. The main street has some extremely touristy shops that kind of diminish the experience. Some of the public toilets really stink.
  • What to write about such a famous and well-visited place such as this one?! We bought entrance tickets online before we came here and included an audio guide. The entrance is all the way to the top of the island which can be a bit steep but beautiful. If you have online tickets you can skip the queue at the ticket counter and go straight to the desk for the audio guides. The abbey itself is nice to see but interior-wise nothing special. The USP for us was the terrace on the very top with amazing views over the ocean, bay and land. The audio guides make you press numbers to listen to the history of a specific area but the numbers on the walls were often not there so you had to guess when and what number to press for listening. Go here if you have time (approx. 3 hours) and curious to see an abbey from the inside. Other than not much added value in my opinion.
