Create an itinerary including Lascaux
Explore the impressive variety of prehistoric artifacts at Lascaux. The region boasts 25 decorated caves, which have yielded finds from skeletons to significant artwork. Among the masterpieces on the walls are the Venus de Laussel (Marquay), the frieze of horses in high relief of Cap-Blanc, and many detailed wall paintings of Lascaux. Tip: arrive before the site opens to buy tickets, as they sell out fast. Put Lascaux on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Montignac itinerary maker.

  • The Lascaux Cave Paintings are a collection of prehistoric cave art located in southwestern France. The paintings, estimated to be over 17,000 years old, depict a range of animals including horses, bulls, and deer, as well as abstract symbols and human figures. The images were created using natural pigments such as ochre and charcoal, and were likely made for ritual or decorative purposes. The cave was discovered in 1940 and opened to the public in 1948, but was closed to visitors in 1963 to prevent damage to the delicate artwork. Today, a replica cave is open for visitors to view the paintings.
