Musée de Plein Air des Maisons Comtoises, Nancray

Transport yourself back to a simpler time at Musée de Plein Air des Maisons Comtoises, an open-air street museum--the brainchild of Father Jean Garneret who sought to preserve a disappearing way of life by transporting 29 rural houses from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries to the site. All of the homes you will see are authentic including the furnishings, décor, and workshops.

Diverse organically grown gardens feature heirloom vegetables, herb gardens, and textile and dye-making plants. Live exhibitions show you how artisans and farmers created bricks and materials from mud, baked bread, and spun and weaved wool. The animal museum reflects the relationship between humans and farm animals, and preserves old domestic breeds to encourage their survival. You will also find a rare mountain beehive in existence since the 19th century.
