Create an itinerary including Roman Theatre of Orange
Roman Theatre of Orange was built early in the first century CE, and today hosts the Chorégies d'Orange, a summer opera festival. This is one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the Julian colony of Arausio, which was established by the soldiers of the second legion. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is famous for varied dramatic forms, such as mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and attelana, a kind of farce similar to the commedia dell' arte. Roman audiences, who were allowed to attend free of charge, were fascinated by the spectacular and elaborate sets. The theater was originally used as a distraction for the colonies, to discourage them from political action. • What an amazing thing, to be at the best preserved of the Roman theaters and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was an absolute thrill to be here, and it is wonderful to know it is still in use.

  • The Orange Theatre is a must see in the area. It is the largest Roman made theatre in Europe. It is surrounded by lots of beautiful shops and restaurants as well.

  • This Roman theatre is the best we have ever seen! We were in awe of the structure and the audiotour was very informative. Absolutely worth a visit. Ticket includes the museum across the street where artifacts can be admired up close. Also, for Dutch people or those interested in royalty, there is a small exhibition about the Dutch Royal family.
  • Memorable and definitely worth the visit. Unique as the only Roman amphitheater in France with its stage wall still standing. A visitor can experience what it must have been like to perform on stage before an audience of thousands, with a statue of Caesar above you.
