Create an itinerary including Roman Theatre of Orange
Roman Theatre of Orange was built early in the first century CE, and today hosts the Chorégies d'Orange, a summer opera festival. This is one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the Julian colony of Arausio, which was established by the soldiers of the second legion. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is famous for varied dramatic forms, such as mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and attelana, a kind of farce similar to the commedia dell' arte. Roman audiences, who were allowed to attend free of charge, were fascinated by the spectacular and elaborate sets. The theater was originally used as a distraction for the colonies, to discourage them from political action. • The theatre is one of the best preserved from Roman times by virtue of its impressive "Scaenae frons" (the architectural backdrop to the stage). There are audio sets to explain in various languages...

  • I can recommend the Escape Game. It is highly engaging and a great way to add more depth to a visit to the Roman theater. The free audio guide can be combined with the Escape Game, but I would not suggest that. The audio fragments are relatively long and most of your attention will go to solving the puzzles of the game anyways.
  • This was a wonderful example of ancient Roman architecture and ingenuity that gave rise to a theater that was used for many years for all kinds of entertainment and displays. It is one of only three of this kind in the world in this shape, and is a world UNESCO site. Not to be missed,
