Sanctuaire du Mont Sainte Odile is located atop a 760 m (2,493 ft) peak in the Vosges Mountains immediately west of Barr. Located at the top, the monastery and covent are often deemed the "Pagan Wall" and are most notable for the impressive stone fortifications. Dating back to the Roman times, the fortress was possibly destroyed by vandals. During the second half of the ninth century, when Vikings attacked the low countries that had recently converted to Christianity, Utrecht bishops went into exile and spent much of their time at Sanctuaire du Mont Sainte Odile. Surrounding Celtic settlements and the Hohenburg Abbey make this a charming stop along any road trip. Ample parking at this place not far from Obernai. The building has been restored but visitors don’t have full access. I thought 9Euro for the audio guide was too much.

Worth visiting for the beauty of the place, all the woods and paths around it and the view. The monastery is on a high rock and the nature around it is just magic. No wonder the monks originally chose this spot for founding their monastery.

Monastery with superb view - and some of the most amazing mosaics I've seen. Definitely worth the trip. We visited the monastery as a service was held, and having the organ music and singing in the background only added to the atmosphere. The monastery grounds have many signs urging guests to be quiet and to observe in silence, so a bit unfortunate with a bunch of older people ignoring the signs, shouting and taking pictures (with flash) left and right, but otherwise a serene location with interesting history and art.
