Beautiful Chateau de Pierrefonds is a medieval castle built from 1393-1407 by Louis I de Valois, Duke of Orléans. It is characteristic of defensive military architecture from the Middle Ages. Commissioned by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte and restored by Viollet-le-Duc in 1850, Chateau de Pierrefonds has kept the original exterior from the 14th century military structural design. However, many interior restorations like polychrome paintings were new additions. You may recognize the castle as a location for films including the BBC series "Merlin," "The Messenger: The Story of "Joan of Arc," and "The Man in the Iron Mask" (1998). With 2 kiddies who are massive fans of the Merlin series this was a great experience for them to visit where it was made... The halls are all beautiful and it is fun exploring the winding stone stair cases and corridors of the castle... We thought it would be really lovely if perhaps they opened up a bed chamber to the public and a kitchen maybe one of the dungeons to give a better insight into life in the castle in years gone by... so you can immerse yourself in the history a little more .. Also something for the kids would be a great addition... making more of the knights and princess theme you see in shop...as the children are the future of theses historic sites something to spark their imaginations and encourage them to return would be a great idea. Overall though a lovely place to visit and wander and soak up some beautiful french history
It was an amazing site. Big. Giant. Massive battlements. We parked on street at entrance. Some walking to get into the main castle. There are a lot of scaffolding going up all over the castle on the outside and inside. There is not much to visit on the inside. You can walk through the draw bridge on the wooden deck and and visit the courtyard, chapel and some of the first floor with exhibits showing you images of the way the castle was before it was rebuilt and through time. You can go into another building to see a first floor and second floor room. Other areas were closed to the general public. It was still worthwhile visiting. Maybe in another five years it will look so much better!
