Housed in the former 18th-century abbey palace, Musee des Beaux-Arts is dedicated to the greatest artistic movements from the 15th to the 20th centuries, through paintings, sculptures, furniture, arts & champagne, and objets d'art. The ground floor is dedicated to the 20th century and the beginnings of modernity with emphasis on Art Déco, Cubism, and Surrealism with works by Paul Gauguin, Matisse, and Paul Jouve. Renowned works, include "Death of Marat" by Jacques-Louis David, "La lecture du role" by Renoir, and the sculpture "Jeune Alsacienne of Orpheline Alsacienne" by Rodin.
Many of the collections, including the 17th through the 19th-century pieces, are relocated to the new building next to the Bowling Green. View the impressive collection of 27 canvasses by Camille Corot, the 19th-century artist, and 13 exceptional watercolor portraits on paper by Lucas Cranach the Elder. The first floor displays of impressive contemporary art from the 20th century, between WWI and WWII up to the abstract art of the 1960s, have also been relocated to the new building. One main draw to Reims. Checked online that it was closed on Tuesdays - fair do. Arrived on a Wednesday to find a notice saying closed for repairs/work etc - for a few years. Hmm.
