Create an itinerary including Chateau de Malmaison
Once the residence of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Josephine de Beauharnais, Chateau de Malmaison boasts original 19th-century decor, paintings, furniture, and a large collection of porcelain. You can take a guided tour or explore the museum on your own. Assorted rooms include the Chamber of Napoleon, billiard room, and music room. The library features mahogany furniture from the 18th century and Nicolas Constant Lemaire's celestial globe from 1788. Head to the dining room to see Josephine's porcelain service. This room also contains murals painted by Louis Lafitte in 1800 representing six pompéiennes dancers. Josephine's luxurious apartments feature her original bed and a simply decorated anteroom. Look for the famous painting by Jacques-Louis David, "Napoleon Crossing the Alps." • Visited the chateau in the morning, and Versailles in the afternoon. Spectacular though it was at Versailles, enjoyed the chateau better. Very peaceful surroundings and a really interesting house, with such history and some surprising rooms! The gardens are lovely for a walk too, although not on the Versailles scale! Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
  • Lovely little chateau. Gives a good view of the history and relationship between Napoleon and Josephine. Great collection of paintings.
