La Grotte des Demoiselles
La Grotte des Demoiselles has served as, among other things, a hiding place and refuge for people from various walks of life. Exploring the cave was quite perilous until the 20th century, when it was outfitted with concrete stairs, walkways, sturdy railings, and extensive lighting. The name, which also has been "fairies' grotto," comes from a legend about a young shepherd who followed his lamb into the cave until he fell into a vast chamber known as the cathedral. Just before losing consciousness, he reportedly saw a vision of young ladies dancing and singing around him. When he awoke, he was outside the cave with his lamb. A visit to La Grotte des Demoiselles represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois trip itinerary website to plot your vacation.

A limestone cave system that has been opened up for public access. A short funicular train will take you up into the main grotto and you are escorted around by a guide who will give you information. Our guide didn't speak much English and his French was too fast for us to follow. However it is a good experience and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
