Create an itinerary including Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste
Though appearing simple from the outside, Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste features a gilded wooden altarpiece that's so intricately carved, it's been declared a historic monument in its own right. King Louis XIV also married the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain here, making the church a national historic monument, too. Wander through the church, parts of which date back to the 15th century, to see the many carvings. The altarpiece alone includes statues of 18 saints and representations of the Holy Spirit and God. • Very ornate and interesting. Right in the middle of town. Free and easy to access. I think it was open all day for visitors.

  • The Church of John the Baptist (Saint- Jean-Baptiste), where June 9, 1660 Louis XIV, king of France and Navarra, (grandson of Henry IV) married Mary Theresa of Spain. This is the largest temple in the Basque part of France. It's a very exciting feeling to study history in this way
  • An amazing cathedral with such a long history. I could never have imagined that the Roi Soleil himself would have his marriage here in a remote little town so far from the centre of France.
