Create an itinerary including Bibracte
Bibracte keeps you and your family busy with three attractions in one: the archaeological site, the museum of Celtic civilization, and the research center. Relive history at the peak that contained the largest and most important hill fort in Gaul at the end of the Iron Age. An audio commentary in English guides you through the exhibits and interesting recreations of key buildings, such as the blacksmiths shop and a typical house interior. Archaeologists continue to work at the site and you can watch them dig for cultural and biological treasures. A visit to Bibracte represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Saint-Leger-sous-Beuvray itinerary app to plot your vacation.

  • This is a very interesting archaeological site, but don't mention Asterix & Obelix to the kids before your visit. That's the mistake we made and we paid for it in terms of disappointed...

  • One of the ancient Roman capitals, Bibrat is an archaeological site still under recovery/restoration. A well worth visit with a knowledgeable guide that lasts up to 2 hours, and can be booked in advance over the phone. On Monday at 15:30 it's also available in English. A German visit is available on Tuesday but I can't remember the time. You can also decide to do everything on your own, reading bilingual panels as well as climb up to the top by foot, which frankly I think it's the best choice. It's about a km and half to the highest point and it takes about 20 mins if you're a fast waker. Minibuses are available for lazy people, or when the sun is too hot. On site there's a restoration point which apparently serves "Roman" style food. I've not eaten there, but the price sounded reasonable. I got hay ice cream though (packed in a nearby monk monastery apparently) that was really nice.
