Vaucluse is a department named after the famous spring, the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, close to the Mediterranean Sea, with a breezy, warm climate. The name means "Closed Valley," because the valley ends with a cliff face from which emanates a spring whose origin is so deep that its source has yet to be determined. Bordered by the Rhône to the west and the River Durance to the south, the mountains occupy a significant proportion of the eastern half of the department, with Mont Ventoux towering at 1,912 m (6,272 ft), also known as "the Giant of Provence," dominating the landscape. This department has interesting attractions in the form of medieval ramparts in its main town of Avignon, and Gordes is often considered to be one of the most beautiful villages and popular vacation spots in the country.
