As one of the three major museums in Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz Museum contains a gallery with fine art representing the medieval period to early 20th century. The museum's collection began to come together in 1824, although it didn't move to its current location until 2001. In that year, it also gained a comprehensive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works on permanent loan from Gérard Corboud. Consider getting a Museum Card, which allows access to this and many other museums in the city. • Although it is not completely open right now (one floor is under construction when I visited) I still really enjoyed it! The first floor is dedicated to old religious paintings. The second floor was my favourite because it had paintings from the baroque period. I particularly enjoyed reading about how paintings are analysed in order to understand how they were painted as well as if they are real.
  • I happened upon this museum, and I'm happy I did. It has three floors (there are wheelchair friendly lifts) of exhibitions, which were very good. All artwork has German and English descriptions, which was helpful, but it would have been even better if I'd been offered an audio option at the start. Lovely little shop at the entrance. €8 entrance fee.
