Create an itinerary including St. Michael's Church
Located in the heart of Munich's pedestrian area, St. Michael's Church is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps and features the second-largest vaulted ceiling in the world, after St. Peter's in Rome. The Jesuit church, built between 1583 and 1587, was conceived as a spiritual center for the Counter Reformation. Duke of Bavaria William V pulled down 87 houses in the center of Munich to bring this ambitious project to life. The building's style largely influenced Southern Germany's early Baroque architecture. Between the two entrances, look for one of the church's most famous monuments: the large bronze statue of the Archangel Michael fighting a demon. Inside, you'll be in awe of the barrel-vaulted roof, which spans more than 20 m (65 ft).
