A cluster of ancient ruins of great architectural and historical significance, Acropolis of Athens has been the star attraction of Athens for many centuries and is a World Heritage Site. Sitting on a rocky hill just above the city, this age-old citadel contains ruins of temples constructed during the 5th century BCE. The "City on a Hill," as its name roughly translates, contains outstanding examples of Classical architecture that continues to influence the building styles of modern cities around the world. Although pollution and exposure to weather continue to take their toll on the ancient buildings, the historical hill remains an important reminder of the cultural influence and political power ancient Greece once exercised on the rest of the world. Acropolis of Athens reviews
Really interesting site. It was fantastic to have seen this in real life and good to have seen at a relatively quiet time. Route up the slopes is a little steep, but not too taxing.

Buy the combined ticket online. You then just scan or show it at the entrance. Highly recommended! I didn't wait at all.. As for the Acropolis - it's definitely worth it, most impressive and interesting structure, however not my favourite of the top sites. It is great, no doubt, but the crowd is unimaginable, thus you can't really enjoy peaceful exploration. The top site can be explored in about an hour, HOWEVER (!!) be careful not to exit prematurely or you'll have to buy another ticket, depending on where you enter from. There are two entrances: on the top, and from the main street in front of the big glass museum. You should take the lower entrance and ask how to make your way up. I took the upper one, explored the Acropolis, exited, and was not allowed to go in from the other way. And I didn't see a way down through the Acropolis, but... oh well. The view is also good, the structure is in reconstruction, so the best thing about this part were the few statues.
Here are only a few of the richest gifts ancient Greece has given to the world that still impact us today. • It was home to the first recognized historian. • It is the birthplace of world-famous mathematicians. • It is the foundation of Western philosophic thought. • Its founders designed the initial concept of democracy. • It was the first place to bring trial by jury into the courtroom. • It educated and entertained us with mythology. • It brought us the origins of theater. • It created the Olympic games. • It introduced beautiful architecture. • It shared with the world an incredible collection of sculptures and pottery. • It brought us the explanation of true tranquility. • It gave us the most comprehensive, meaningful word for “happiness.” • It gave us greek language as the basis for the technical terms of all sciences.
