Trip Planner: Europe / Iceland / Capital Region / Reykjavik / Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition
Learn about the construction of buildings during the time of Vikings and the settlement of Iceland through thousand-year-old artifacts in Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition. Located in Reykjavik City Museum, the exhibit features archaeological finds excavated in Aðalstræti in 2001 which represent the oldest physical evidence of human habitation in the city. A wall fragment from before 871 CE and a longhouse from the 10th century are the focal point of the exhibit. Both are preserved in their original locations. Explore the exhibit to gain an understanding of how the first settlers lived. Follow the displays using an audio guide that's available in several different languages. This museum was a great introduction to Reykjavik a nd its fascinating history. The interactive displays were exceptional. Glad I did this on my first day in Iceland so I could have a foundation...

A well made little museum (you will need 1h to 1,5h) which starts in 871 in the cellar and goes to 2020 on the second floor. Mainly text and images, but also some artifacts. It is included in the Reykjavík City Pass. There is an interactive model building table on the first floor where you can zoom in on the people and listen in to their historic conversation, quite nice.
Great museum in the heart of the city. It really dives into one topic, which is the early people of Iceland and specifically Reykjavik. I love that you walk through history as you go up in the layers to the higher floors. The diorama on the second floor, which uses VR to overly video on a model, was incredible - blew me away with the interactivity. We rushed through the restored house and the top floor which dealt with the impacts of the World Wars (especially II) on the national development, but I would definitely return to read more about those. A lot of this did involve reading so not sure how kids would fare, but adults there seemed very engaged.
