Climb up Carrantoohil for breathtaking views atop Ireland's highest peak. There are several paths to the top, but most people take the northeast route. Alternatively, you can take the "horseshoe" trip and climb from the west. While you don't need special equipment, be careful of loose rocks and wear dependable hiking shoes. Once you've ascended, you'll be rewarded with the awe-inspiring sight of three bowl-shaped valleys and their lakes surrounded by mountains. A steel cross was erected here in 1976. Consider hiring a guide if you are an inexperienced hiker. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Killarney holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Carrantoohil and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Excellent hike, very interesting traverse, we avoided the ladder and all the scree. It's doable as a beginner if you have some one in the group with a bit more experience. All types of weather experienced, bring some swim gear, opportunity to explore some lake's. Watch your ankles coming down. Can take 3-7 hrs depending on strength and stops.

We did the hike going around the back first (past Hag’s Tooth) which is the reverse of what most people were doing. This made the ascent really steep, but we wouldn’t have recommended going back down that way. One tip is to check the weather before you go as the hike can take up to 6 hours round trip and the weather will change quickly. We got to the summit as the weather started to turn and passed a lot of people still going up on our way back down. It started raining and that made the last 2 hours quite tough as we descended in a waterfall. Otherwise the hike was one of the best in Ireland and well worth it!
