Listowel Castle, located near the town of Listowel, County Kerry in Ireland, was built in the 15th century. It was the last bastion against Queen Elizabeth I in the First Desmond Rebellion, and was the last fortress of the Geraldines to be subdued. It fell after 28 days siege to Sir Charles Wilmot on 5 November 1568, who had the castle's garrison executed in the following days. The castle is a noted example of Anglo-Norman architecture in County Kerry, and has been the subject of several restoration projects. It is now protected as a national monument, and is open to the public for tours on a daily basis.Plan to see Listowel Castle and other attractions that appeal to you using our Listowel day trip planning website.

I really enjoyed this tour. I was not familiar with the history of the Middle ages in Ireland and this visit was not only interesting from an architectural point of view but also as a history lesson..... more

You should go here! Only 2 of the 4 towers remain, but they tell a tale. Do take the guided tour as it's very interesting and entertaining. We were shown around by Margaret and she had a wealth of facts and fun facts about the castle and it's inhabitants. People back then were equally disgusting as inventive 😂 To visit the castle you have to climb some stairs, but they're easy. There are some small rooms during the tour, but they're part of the castle's story, but beware if you're not into small spaces. Kids will like the exploring bit and the things shown and explained during the tour. The tour takes between 30 to 45 minutes. It's incredible you van visit this place and take the guided tour for free. There's even a free car park just around the corner by the river and the bridge to the racetrack.
