St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecosystems, is said to have been praying at San Damiano in 1205, when the structure was in disrepair. While kneeling, he saw a vision that told him to rebuild the church. The interior of the cathedral has a single nave, one circular rose window, and a wooden crucifix dating back to 1637. Although St. Francis' history here attracts visitors, it is primarily a place devoted to humble tranquility. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Assisi trip simple and quick.

A lovely place to visit. The tranquil nature of the place was unfortunately spoiled by a group of noisy teenagers who were not reprimanded by the adult with them or the monks in attendance. Would recommend a visit at a more peaceful time.

I can't believe that I walked the rooms where St Clare prayed, walked, ate with her sisters and "touched" the wall where mass was "televised" because she was too ill to attend was all too much for me! I envisioned the time when St Clare repelled the marauders from climbing the walls of the convent. I consider this experience as God's gift to me as a Secular Franciscan.
