Create an itinerary including San Damiano
St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecosystems, is said to have been praying at San Damiano in 1205, when the structure was in disrepair. While kneeling, he saw a vision that told him to rebuild the church. The interior of the cathedral has a single nave, one circular rose window, and a wooden crucifix dating back to 1637. Although St. Francis' history here attracts visitors, it is primarily a place devoted to humble tranquility. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Assisi trip simple and quick.

  • Great place, but too busy if you want a reflective visit. Some of the staff were grumpy which spoilt things. Ignore that and this is a beautiful.
  • Not in the center of Assisi, hence not crowded as other Holy places in the town. However, the tiny church is amazing as it also has a significant role in Christianism and Italian literature. St. Francis wrote the Canticle of the Sun here, known as the earliest known vernacular literature written in the Umbrian dialect of Italian.
