Abbazia di San Galgano is perhaps best known for the legend of the sword in the stone, said to have been thrust into a rock near Siena by a medieval knight. The sword, of which only the hilt is visible, is preserved at a small, rounded chapel on a hill right next to this ruined Romanesque abbey. The abbey itself sits in a colorful setting of cypress trees, fields of sunflowers, and rolling green hills. Built sometime in the 13th century, the abbey is named after Galgano Guidotti, a knight who renounced his worldly life and became a hermit--after planting his sword into that legendary rock. The site includes an herbal shop and a small souvenir store. Use our Chiusdino trip itinerary planning website to arrange your visit to Abbazia di San Galgano and other attractions in Chiusdino.

There's really nothing to see here. It's a waste of time and money to tour this place unless you ABSOLUTELY just have to see it. The abbey is empty and roofless. Nothing really interesting about it.

Beautiful place. Easy parking and proper paths to walk along ( I use a wheelchair, so ideal) If you are lucky you might get to see a wedding taking place - the abbey is still open to the public...

A must visit when in Tuscany, you park and take a short walk that brings the Abbey into better view with each step. The visit isn't expensive and won't take up hours of the day but is such a unique place. When we were there I got the sense this is a place that is less known to the foreign tourist crowd, we may have been the only native English speakers and I loved it! What better than to escape the crowds of international tourists than to find a unique place like the Abbey of San Galgano? There is also a wonderful little church up the hill and a short walk past is a shop with wine from the on-site vineyard.

What a charming spot❤️Definitely recommended, it has a spirit and gives chills. We saw it during golden hour which was just wow. Even though close to Siena, it was empty without crowds. We loved it!
