Create an itinerary including Basilica of San Frediano
Stop into Basilica of San Frediano, known for its enormous golden 13th-century mosaic of Christ's ascension, designed by Berlinghiero Berlinghier in a Byzantine style. The inside of the cathedral is carved entirely of white marble, and houses Roman capitals repurposed from the Roman amphitheater nearby. The focal point, though, is the enormous 12th-century baptismal font, the Fonte Lustrale, decorated with biblical scenes by medieval Lombardi sculptors. Outside, you can enjoy dinner at one of the cafes along with views of the cathedral's glittering facade. • Beautiful basilica in the town of Lucca. The building has striped brickwork which adds to the impressive effect. There is also a large tower adjoining the basilica.

  • Having seen most of the churches in Tuscany, this one is rather unimpressive as a whole, but also kinda unique. I never venture into a church for religious reasons, but for the artwork and often...

  • The church is one of the oldest in Lucca. It costs €3 to enter. You can purchase the ticket online or when you arrive. The church is open 9am to 6pm. When you enter the lady provides you with an information leaflet in your language. As you approach the church there is a large mosaic on the outside of the church and a number of frescos inside the church. Each look like they are painted yesterday. Once inside the church look up at the ceiling as this beautiful.
  • Went to mass at San Frediano two Sundays - beautiful church.
