St. Ambrose built Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio from 379 to 386 CE, making it one of the most ancient churches in the city. However, the majority of what you see today is from 12th-century restorations, hence its Romanesque style. Admire the mosaics in the apse, one of which depicts the life of St. Ambrose, Milan's patron saint. Look for the many faded frescoes in various nooks and crannies of the church. Visit the crypt under the high altar. It contains the remains of three saints: Ambrose, Gervasus, and Protasus. With our online itinerary creator, Milan attractions like Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Go and visit this beautiful church, please! The entry is free. If you want a tour, you can find a staff member right at the church and ask for the tickets. The inside area is very cozy, pretty, warm. Smells amazing.
  • Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio is one of the most ancient churches in Milan and was built in 379–386 by Saint Ambrose. Initially, the basilica was outside the city of Milan, but over the following centuries, the city grew up around it. The entrance is free and definitely worth a visit.
