The only active volcano on the European mainland, Vesuvio National Park is best known for its dramatic eruption in 79 CE, which led to the destruction of ancient cities Herculaneum and Pompeii. The volcano is now the centerpiece of a national park, established in 1995 to prevent further development in the area. The summit of the volcano is open to visitors, with a network of well-maintained paths around the mountain. An access road can get you to about 200 m (660 ft) from the summit (measured vertically), but after that access is on foot only. A spiral walkway leads up the final section of the climb, from the road to the rim of the crater. On a sunny day, you'll have sweeping views of the surrounding area, stretching all the way to the Bay of Naples. So the volcano itself is amazing and well worth the visit, but from my experience I would suggest either buying your ticket online before you go, or going with a tour group (and be selective) that includes the access ticket, because buying a ticket there was a bureaucratic nightmare and there is no actual ticket office there where you can buy a ticket with cash. The local bus to get there was really great and the nice driver stopped half way up the Volcano so we could take pictures and the ticket price of €3.10 for a single trip was fair.

The park itself is impressive with amazing views and is nice a guided tour is included. However it's just a huge pity that the drive up and down is marred by huge quantities of rubbish on the roadside. It is like an open tip. I think in 30 years the commune have never ever sent anyone to clean despite it being one of the major attractions of the area. I also don't understand how some people, having enjoying this great spectacle of nature, can then celebrate it by flinging their plastic drinks bottle out of the car window on the way down...
