Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina
Lying on the bank of Pisa's Arno River, Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina is one of Tuscany's finest Gothic churches. Although it was originally built in 1230, the church was dismantled and rebuilt on a higher level in 1871 because of water infiltration from the river. The church's name comes from a legend that a thorn belonging to the crown worn by Christ on the cross came here in 1933. The church's facade, with two gates, linteled arches, and several statues and sculptures, is much more ornate than the simple interior. A tiny gothic gem. It is not often that buildings so thoroughly Gothic can be found in Italy. This tiny but gorgeous church can be found on the bank of the river Arno, you can find it while taking an evening stroll along the river
