Create an itinerary including Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli
Sitting atop the Campidoglio, accessed by a monumental staircase, Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli is designated the church of the city council of Rome. Though its foundations as a place of worship were laid in the sixth century, today's church is mostly a reflection of the Franciscans' application of Romanesque-Gothic styles in the 13th century. The church is adorned with chandeliers and a wooden coffered ceiling, and there are a number of impressive frescoes throughout. During the Christmas season, the famous Santo Bambino (infant Jesus) statue carved of olive wood is brought to the high altar. If climbing the 124 marble steps to this building seems too daunting, take the steps to the right to get in a back entrance, where the incline is not as steep. Make Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli a centerpiece of your Rome vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Rome trip planner.

  • The exterior of this cathedral is fairly unassuming compared to many of the other cathedrals/basilicas in Rome, so we we spent many trips to Rome passing next to it on our way to the Capitoline...

  • This church was bit of a gem in the middle of many other more famous attractions, but the whole experience was great, so much beauty and detail. There is a flight of beautiful stairs as you access it, but definitely worth the climb once you see it all.
  • We stumbles upon the Basilica by accident, climbed the heigh stairs and went in for a look. I'm very glad we did that. If you're into experiencing incredibly beautiful Baroque Basilica, I would certainly advise to take a look when in Rome.
