With one of the region's largest artificial lakes, Sauris is also the highest municipality in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Thanks to its elevation of 1,200 m (4,000 ft) above sea level, it has earned the nickname of "Pearl in the Alps." All around it spreads a landscape of pastures, dotted by traditional shepherd huts. Sauris also represents an island of German language and culture in Northern Italy, preserved for centuries largely due to the area's relative seclusion and disconnection from other nearby towns.
