Spend a few hours on Isola Torcello, and you'll understand why Ernest Hemingway chose this as his writing base in 1948. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta dates back to 639 CE and houses 11th- and 12th-century Byzantine art, including a depiction of the Last Judgment. Look out from the bell tower for views of the countryside. The island also is home to two 14th-century palaces, the Palazzo dell'Archivo and the Palazzo del Consiglio. The latter, originally the seat of the island's government, is now a museum. Stop by Locanda Cipriani, the restaurant and hotel where Hemingway wrote "Across the River and Into the Trees." • This was actually "the" island in tha lagoon of Venice until the 12th century and what is to show for that if not a gigantic old church from year 687.

  • It was a nice little island, but so boring. To be fair, we went in. December and all that was open was the museum. If you're doing a. Kay tour of islands by Venice, I would try to do one that is just morano and borano
  • Not a very exciting little island for a boat tour stop, however that was in December so there may be more plants and excitement in summer more touristy months. Looks like it could be a cute place for a VERY quiet honeymoon or weekend getaway, but definitely not a must see in Venice
