Reset yourself with bright, white sand and clear blue water at Hatenohama on Kume Island. Accessible only through a glass-bottom boat tour, the 7 km long (4.3 mi) stretch of sand makes this beach a popular outing spot, where you can both swim and snorkel. See some of the exquisite shells and tropical fish, or take snorkeling and diving lessons with expert instructors. A huge area of pristine shallow water sheltered by coral reefs and funky rock formations offers excellent diving opportunities, and you'll see local fishermen looking for a catch further out from the shore. Bring water with you and go to the toilet beforehand, as the beach offers few amenities. Find out how to plan Kumejima-cho trip without stress by asking Inspirock to help create an itinerary.

  • About a 30 min boat ride away, Hatenohama is a white sandbar surrounded by clear blue water. We opted for a 1/2 day tour from Eef Beach Hotel and that is more than enough to snorkel and walk around...

  • If you temper your expectations you’ll like it. There was a lot of rubbish on the sand bank. The people running (?) it require you to wear a life jacket when swimming in the small designated area, no swimming out of that area. The sand right near the waters edge is very nice as is the water. It is a place to relax, not for snorkelling.
  • This place is beautiful, but it looks nicer in pictures than it actually is. There is just one outhouse on island, so remind your kids to poop before hoping on the boat. The beach is full of trash, but the water is crystal clear and there are a decent number of fish and small bits of living coral near the sandbar. The best part for us was the glass-bottomed boat stoping to see sea turtles on the way back to port. The sandbar itself was a little overwhelming, but if you step back and take the entirety of it in then it is worth it for a one time visit.
