Originally built over 2,000 years ago by the Arab Nabataeans, Petra serves as a representative example of ancient rock-cut architecture and water collection techniques. Visitors know the fortress and important post on Middle Eastern trade routes for its reddish color. Approach the ancient site by hiking an easy 1 km (0.6 mi) path through steep rock cliffs. Upon arrival, you'll find hundreds of surviving tombs carved in relief out of the rock, as well as a Roman-style amphitheater, a Nabataean monastery, and an intricately detailed treasury. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat to protect your head from the sun, and carry plenty of drinking water. Petra was there highlight we expected it to be. It was busy in places but not impossible. A breathtaking experience throughout. We went back for Petra at Night. Very nice indeed but a little hectic...

Truly a wonder of the ancient world, and the principal cultural treasure of the Kingdon of Jordan. It's worth the trip. We spent a day there and only saw the things on the main path. There are many other sites off the main trail. We could have spent two or three days exploring it all. We should have got our admission tickets at the airport when we obtained our visas. Don't forget Little Petra - if you have the time. Water, sunblock, a hat, and good shoes are a must. You can pay to be driven/carried all the way to the Monastery. So many vendors. In some places they ruined the atmosphere of it. But they have a right to be there - It's their home. Just don't buy anything from children.

Breathtakingly beautiful site, loved the hike up to the Monastery. There are so many hidden paths and trails that take you to different viewpoints. It's an amazing place to visit and revisit.
