Along a coastline of natural beaches, discover Fortaleza de Sagres, a historical site featuring a great fortress, impressive plants, and wildlife. Henry the Navigator launched his expeditions from this site in the 1400s, beginning the Portuguese Age of Discoveries. Henry built a chapel next to his home in 1459 that was replaced with the Nossa Senhora da Graca church in 1579. The magnificent fortress was built to defend the region from North African raiders in the 16th century. Though the 1755 earthquake destroyed portions of the structures, they have undergone extensive renovations since. Fort is simple. Entry only €1,50 for seniors. Large premonitory behind it only accessible through fort. No toilets & no cafe but drinks machine. Views of surrounding cliffs and beaches magnificent. Walked all around for an hour. Well worth a visit, also for the old church.

Beautiful, windy open space with incredible views! Be sure to include a light jacket if you get chilled easily. The water, caves, and views are gorgeous. There are informative signs posted throughout to educate visitors about the history, the flora, and the fauna.
